Waukegan Community Unit School District #60 is inviting all community members to take part in a historic Mexican tradition during its upcoming Dia de Los Muertos Celebration this week.

The free event will take place Friday, October 29, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the Abbott Middle School gym, 1319 Washington Street. During the Dia de Los Muertos Celebration families and community members will have the opportunity to enjoy a number of traditional foods, entertainment, and other holiday-appropriate activities.

In line with the traditional celebration of the holiday, a Dia de los Muertos Ofrenda will be set up for families. Oferendas are specially built altars families use to honor their lost loved ones. Offerings are placed upon the ofrenda to help remember and celebrate departed family and friends. Traditional ofrendas are full of symbols and meaning, and have a long history in Mexican culture.
