How to Help at Home

Be sure to have your child practice Reading daily to increase fluency and vocabulary. As we continue quarter 3, students should now be able to read independently. Your child can practice his/her counting at home by playing FREE math games online. Check out these websites:

Fun Stuff

Rainbow Skittles Experiment

Materials: a plate, warm water, different colored Skittles

Directions:

1. Grab your plate and organize the Skittles in a circle around the edge of the plate. Kids can try different color patterns each time they do the experiment!

2. Gently pour water in the center of the plate. Warm water works better than cold. Make sure there is enough water to go past the Skittles while filling the plate.

3. Wait and watch the Skittles colors move towards the center of the plate with beautiful rainbow streaks.

4. That’s it. It’s so quick and easy!

Learning Objectives

Reading:

Students will continue reading decodable books

which include words they can sound out as well as sight words. Students will finish their unit on Weather and Seasons where they have been identifying characteristics of weather. We will begin our unit on Colonial Towns and Townspeople. Students will learn about the early history of our country. Students will compare and contrast their life versus the life during colonial time.

Math:

Students will be working in Unit 7, as they expand their number sense. Students will add and subtract using a number line, playing games with dominoes, and using ten frames to add teen numbers. Students will continue to identify and describe the attributes of 2-D and 3-D shapes. Students will collect data and create graphs to represent their data. They will be making “smart guesses” as we discuss tools and strategies for making estimates. Students will continue working with number stories throughout the unit.

Writing:

Students will continue working on an uppercase letter at the beginning of the sentence, spacing between words, and a period at the end of the sentence. Students will practice writing a sentence and illustrating their own picture to go with it.
