Dear Families and Staff,
I am writing today in light of an alarming and disappointing event that occurred at one of our schools this morning. As many of you may be aware, there was a heavy police presence at the Waukegan High School-Washington Campus in response to a potential threat on campus. You can read our updates on the incident here. Luckily, no one was hurt, and the individuals involved have been taken into police custody.
This entire incident is inexcusable. This was a scary event for our students and staff inside the building, and was undoubtedly a frightening situation for our parents on the outside, who entrust us with the safety of their children every day. No one should have to endure this type of fear in any school building, and we must do better. I would like to thank school personnel and police for their swift response to this situation.
We know this incident is not a reflection of our student body as a whole, and we are sorry that two students’ irresponsible and immature actions have shed a negative light upon our District and our 15,000 amazing students. As a mother I will be having important conversations reminding my child about conducting himself in a respectful and responsible manner, and I hope others do the same.
Needless to say, these actions from students will absolutely not be tolerated. Any students found to be making real or fake threats will face harsh consequences in accordance with District policy and State law.
I thank you for your time, and please know that the safety of our students and staff will always be a priority in Waukegan Public Schools.

Les estoy escribiendo el día de hoy teniendo en cuenta el evento alarmante y decepcionante que ocurrió en una de nuestras escuelas esta mañana. Como muchos de ustedes están al tanto, hubo una fuerte presencia policial presente en la Escuela Secundaria de Waukegan - Plantel de Washington en respuesta a una potencial amenaza en el plantel. Usted puede leer nuestras actualizaciones sobre el incidente aquí. Afortunadamente, nadie fue herido, y los individuos involucrados han sido llevados en custodia policial.
Todo este incidente es inexcusable. Ha sido un evento que ha asustado a nuestros estudiantes y personal dentro del edificio, e indiscutiblemente fue un evento aterrador para nuestros padres en el exterior, que nos confían la seguridad de sus hijos todos los días. Nadie debería tener que padecer este tipo de miedo en cualquier edificio escolar, y debemos hacerlo mejor. Me gustaría darle las gracias al personal escolar y a la policía por su rápida respuesta hacia esta situación.
Sabemos que este incidente no es un reflejo del conjunto de nuestro alumnado y lamentamos que las acciones irresponsables e inmaduras de dos de nuestros estudiantes hayan arrojado una luz negativa sobre nuestro Distrito y nuestros increíbles 15,000 estudiantes. Como madre mantendré una importante conversación para recordarle a mi hijo sobre dirigirse de una manera respetuosa y responsable, y espero que otros hagan lo mismo.
No hace falta decir que estas acciones por parte de estudiantes no serán toleradas en absoluto. Cualquier estudiante encontrado haciendo amenazas reales o falsas tendrá que afrontar severas consecuencias en acuerdo a la política del Distrito y la ley del Estado.
Agradezco su tiempo, y por favor sepa que la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y personal siempre será una prioridad de las Escuelas Públicas de Waukegan.
