The Board of Education for Waukegan Community Unit School District # 60 recently began the process to consider renaming of Thomas Jefferson Middle School and Daniel Webster Middle School.

Board policy 1204, Naming of School Facilities, lays out a detailed process to be followed when the Board is asked to consider renaming a school. That process begins with the formation of an 11 member committee at each school to explore name options, which then will be presented to the school community for additional input before names are presented to the Board for its consideration. Nine of the committee members will be from the community served by the school.  

Consistent with Board policy, community members are invited to apply to be a member of either Jefferson’s or Webster’s renaming committee.  To be eligible to participate on the committee, you must:

(1) reside within the geographic service area of the school; or

(2) be a student currently attending the school; or

(3) operate a business or civic organization within the school’s service area; or 

(4) have a child who currently is assigned to the school as the student's primary school attendance site; or

(5) be an employee of the school.

The goal of the Board and administration is to have each committee membership reflect a diverse representation of thoughts and perspectives. Individuals wishing to serve on one of the committees are asked to email the school principal with a letter of interest with the following information:
