Four Waukegan Public Schools employees were recently recognized by the Illinois State Board of Education during its annual “Those Who Excel” awards.

ISBE honored District # 60 educators in two categories this year. The “Those Who Excel” awards recognize educators and volunteers from across Illinois who are doing exemplary work for students. Awards are given in one of seven categories, and are broken up into three levels.

ISBE recognized Ms. Amy Bach, a social worker at Whittier Elementary School, with an Award of Merit in the Student Support Personnel category. Ms. Bach has worked at Whittier as a social worker for seven years, and was previously an intern at Webster Middle School.

Also recognized with an Award of Merit in the Student Support Personnel category was Ms. Jayne Perlman, who works as an Itinerant Occupational Therapist, supporting students at  Greenwood Elementary School and Lyon Magnet School. Ms. Perlman has worked in District 60 for 13 years, and has supported students at several schools during her time.

Maria Garcia, a resource paraprofessional at Greenwood Elementary School, was recognized with an Award of Merit in the Educational Service Personnel category. Ms. Garcia is a longtime District 60 employee, who has spent the last 22 years at Greenwood.

Finally, also in the Educational Service Personnel category, Ms. Anita Tejeda, a dual language paraprofessional at Hyde Park Elementary, was recognized with an Award of Merit. Ms. Tejeda has worked at Hyde Park for seven years.

“We are very excited for these four staff members, and this honor is indicative of the amazing work they do for their students every day,” said Superintendent of Schools, Theresa Plascencia. “It’s always great to see the State Board honor the fantastic staff we have in our schools.”
