Waukegan Community Unit School District #60 today surpassed one million meals distributed to students since the initial closing of schools in March. As of Tuesday, August 11, 1,011,627 meals have been distributed  to students during these twice-a-week food giveaways.

In order to meet the needs of the community, and ensure the safety of students and staff, food distribution events have evolved over time. Initially held at five school sites, distribution quickly evolved to expand to 117 locations, which take place each Tuesday and Thursday. Free meals are distributed using 23 buses across the community. A list of distribution sites can be found here: https://www.wps60.org/safety/coronavirus_covid-19/food_distribution_sites

At its peak in the spring, District 60 was serving nearly 60,000 meals a week.

“It took a lot of collaboration to establish a large scale safe and accessible way to feed our students during this pandemic,” said District 60 Coordinator of Transportation/Child Nutrition, Alicia Williams. “Our staff and volunteers have worked very closely with Illinois Central busing and Preferred Meals, to ensure meals are packed, and distributed in a safe manner.”

Free meal distribution will continue every Tuesday and Thursday, while students are engaged in remote learning. Parents with questions about sites are asked to consult our food distribution map.
