Dear Parents, Students and Staff

As we begin the first full week of summer vacation, I want to again wish you all a safe and healthy break. This is not the time of year that our attention is normally focused on the opening of school in the fall, but our definition of normal has significantly shifted since we last held in-person classes in mid-March. 

We’ve said often that we’re living through unprecedented times. We know these last few months have been difficult, and the next few remain uncertain. What is certain, however, is that in 10 weeks our schools are scheduled to resume instruction for any student not participating in summer school or credit recovery. It’s also certain that the school year is going to begin differently than in the past. 

As we plan for 2020-2021, our priority remains the health and safety of our students and staff. We will continue to follow the advice of health experts, and consult the guidance of education authorities such as the Illinois State Board of Education as we develop our plans. But we also want to ensure that our stakeholders have a voice in the planning process. 

With that in mind, today we are sharing surveys for parents, students and staff to gather your thoughts about returning to classroom instruction this fall. The surveys are intended to gauge stakeholders' comfort levels with various scenarios, and also to help us determine what additional resources may be necessary when we return to in-person instruction.

We appreciate you taking time to answer these questions. The deadline to fill out the survey will be June 15, 2020.

In closing, we know things are going to look and feel different when we return to school in the fall. As these unparalleled circumstances continue we appreciate everyone's support as we work collectively for our children. While we don’t know exactly what our classrooms will look like, we know it will require the work of everyone to create safe and comfortable learning environments.

Estimados Padres, Estudiantes y Personal

Mientras empezamos la primera semana completa de vacaciones de verano, quiero nuevamente desearles a todos un descanso seguro y saludable. Esta no es la época del año en que nuestra atención normalmente se centra en la apertura de la escuela en el otoño, pero nuestra definición de normalidad ha cambiado significativamente desde la última vez que tuvimos clases en persona a mediados de marzo.

Hemos dicho a menudo que estamos viviendo tiempos sin precedentes. Sabemos que estos últimos meses han sido difíciles, y los siguientes siguen siendo inciertos. Sin embargo, lo que es seguro es que en 10 semanas nuestras escuelas están programadas para reanudar la instrucción de cualquier estudiante que no participe en la escuela de verano o recuperación de crédito. También es seguro que el año escolar comenzará de manera diferente que en el pasado.

A medida que planificamos para 2020-2021, nuestra prioridad sigue siendo la salud y la seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y personal. Continuaremos siguiendo los consejos de los expertos en salud y consultaremos la orientación de las autoridades educativas como la Mesa Directiva de Educación del Estado de Illinois a medida que desarrollemos nuestros planes. Pero también queremos asegurarnos de que nuestras partes interesadas tengan voz en el proceso de planificación.

Con eso en mente, hoy estamos compartiendo encuestas para padres, estudiantes y personal para reunir sus pensamientos acerca de regresar a la instrucción en el salón este otoño. Las encuestas están destinadas a medir los niveles de comodidad de las partes interesadas con diversos escenarios, y también a ayudarnos a determinar qué recursos adicionales pueden ser necesarios cuando regresemos a la instrucción en persona.

Para terminar, sabemos que las cosas se verán y se sentirán diferentes cuando regresemos a la escuela en el otoño. A medida que continúan estas circunstancias incomparables, apreciamos el apoyo de todos mientras trabajamos colectivamente por nuestros hijos. Si bien no sabemos exactamente cómo serán nuestros salones, sabemos que requerirá el trabajo de todos para crear entornos de aprendizaje seguros y cómodos.
