Dear Waukegan Families,

This week you likely heard that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued additional warnings regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19). As a school district we have been monitoring the spread of the virus, and we remain connected to federal, state, and local agencies to gather critical information about its spread and its potential impact.

Internally, we continue to discuss our procedures for dealing with infectious diseases. We are guided by our Pandemic Preparedness policy, as well as guidance from the Lake County Health Department, the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), as well as the CDC.

At this time health officials have stated that they do not recommend the cancelling of classes or mass gatherings. That said, we still believe it is important for schools and families to prepare for the possibility of schools needing to close due to the spread of the virus. In the unlikely event that circumstances change, please be assured, we will follow the direction and recommendations of our public health officials.

In the meantime, important information about the coronavirus, including updates on symptoms, testing and preparedness, can be found from the Illinois Department of Public Health, as well as the Centers for Disease Control.

In closing, we will continue to work closely with health officials and continue to share important information with you as it becomes available. Our students’ and staff members' health and safety is our highest priority.

Sincerely,

Theresa Plascencia
Superintendent of Schools
