Dear Waukegan High School Parents/Guardians and Students,

With first semester nearly over, it’s time to begin the course selection process for the 2020-2021 school year. Over the next several weeks, students will be actively involved in conversations with their teachers and counselors about their required and elective course options. We strongly recommend that parents get involved by talking with their students about their selection of courses and how it supports their educational and career goals.

New this year, students will request their elective courses directly in the Infinite Campus Student Portal. To support students with this new process, Freshman Seminar staff and Sophomore and Junior Science teachers will demonstrate procedures, as well as provide students time to explore and enter course requests. Students may enter their elective course requests in the Student Portal from December 9-15, 2019. During this time frame, students may view their recommended required courses and enter elective course requests at any time - even at home.

Selecting appropriate courses is a decision that should be carefully made, and we encourage parents and students to review the WPS Academic Handbook and WHS Course Offering Guide for high school course and program information including:

- Over 20 Advanced Placement (AP) courses with at least two AP courses open to 9th and 10th graders
- Dual credit courses that provide students with opportunities to earn both high school and college credit
- Engineering and technology courses designed to prepare students for 21st Century careers
- World language courses that lead to opportunities for college credit and the Seal of Biliteracy
- Fine Arts courses in award-winning music and art programs

The WPS Academic Handbook can be accessed on the Waukegan High School-Educational Services-Counseling site.

Counselors and students will meet individually in January 2020 to review the course selections for appropriate placement and four-year planning. During these meetings, changes to the originally selected elective courses may be made, and required course options will be discussed. Since the master schedule and high school staffing are driven by student course requests, no changes can be made after requests are finalized. Exceptions will be made for needs related to students with IEPs, medical circumstances, or unforeseen situations that require course revisions to meet individual learning needs.

Parents or students with questions related to the course selection process should contact the student’s counselor. Counselor contact information is posted on the Waukegan High School-Educational Services-Counseling site.

We look forward to partnering with you during the course selection process for the 2020-2021 school year.
